The Caretaker's Cottage was built in the 1770s by Ruben Merriwether, and sits near the manor house where he and his ancestors lived at Roundabout Hills. An exceptional space with a fabulous full kitchen perfect for those who like to cook, it is truly a one of a kind place to stay. The house, where John and Fiona live, and the cottage are secluded and private, but close to all of the art, culture, restaurants and dining in the nearby towns of Frederick, Columbia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.

Indawo
The Caretaker's Cottage at Roundabout Hills is said to have once housed a family of eight! We don't try to cram quite so many into this unique and cozy 18th-century cottage, and have designed it as the perfect space for a solo business traveler or a couple seeking a weekend getaway from the city, or visiting from out of town. We have kept the rough hewn beams in the main room downstairs, as well as the corkscrew staircase up to the bedroom, which has old growth pine wide plank floors.

Glenwood, Maryland, i-United States

Our corner of Howard County, Maryland, has changed a lot in the last 25 years. Once it was prime hunt country, with big farms owned by wealthy land owners, such as the family of the famous Mrs. Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII eventually led to his abdication. While many of the farms have now been developed in our area, there is still quite a bit of open land and many farms are still intact. Our own house used to sit on about 150 acres, but now is on a little over three acres. Down the hill is the Cattail Creek Country Club and Golf Course. Up the road two minutes is the Glenwood Community Center, with a fantastic and very affordable fitness center and an excellent library. In the summer it hosts the Glenwood Farmers Market every Saturday morning. About 10 minutes from our house is a new microbrewery and restaurant called the Brookeville Beer Farm, which is usually packed, especially on weekends. And one of our favorite places in the fruit growing season is Larriland Farm, a family-owned U-Pick farm that is very popular with locals and with folks from Baltimore and DC.

My wife, Fiona, and I love old houses, gardening, cooking, and spending time with our children. We do an awfully lot of the latter as we are homeschooling them for the time being at Roundabout Hills. I am originally from California, but moved to DC for work shortly after I finished my studies. Except for stints abroad in the UK and Peru, we have stayed pretty much here since. Fiona grew up in the UK, met me in London in the 1990s where she was working in book publishing, and was mad enough to marry me and move to DC, where she started a new job at the Smithsonian. After a few years, we uprooted and moved to Lima, Peru, and then came back, started a family, and the rest is history. Fiona is a full time teacher to our two children, and I work in the field of foreign affairs in Washington, D.C.

We are always available to help you and make sure your stay with us is comfortable. We live in the manor house just 50 feet from the cottage, and usually are at homes throughout the week. If you are new to the area and need recommendations on how best to get to DC or Baltimore, or the best local restaurants in our area, we'd be delighted to help.

We take our cues from guests as to how much interaction they want to have with us. If you want to see the main house, just let us know and we'd be happy to give you a quick tour.
